Michael Irvin says the Cowboys need to pick a ‘game-changer’ on defense in the next NFL draft - The Dallas Morning News

Hall of Fame Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin appeared on Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] recently to talk about his former team. Here are some highlights, edited for clarity:

On the bye week, naturally, the Cowboys conversation has been focused on the possibility of Dallas taking a quarterback high in the NFL draft, if the team is lucky enough to be in that position. So, do you think Dak Prescott is a quarterback that can play well enough to reach the Super Bowl? Is he a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, in your eyes?

Michael Irvin: “It’s one thing Dak could have done, and that’s continue to play and put up those incredible numbers that he was putting up. Because, you know, then we’d have said that Dak can put some numbers up, but can he win? The defense was giving up so many points, even though Dak was doing great things, we’d still be asking if he could win. Unfortunately, Dak got hurt. But fortunately, for Dak’s contract situation, oh my god. You have to be saying right now, ok, we see the difference. And while I get the question on whether he’s the guy that can carry a team to a Super Bowl, we’re all looking for guys that can carry a team to a Super Bowl. But if you don’t know who that is, because they don’t come with a dot on their heads ... you don’t know who it is! So, you better keep this one until they start making them with dots. ... Trevor Lawrence? You don’t know if Trevor Lawrence is one. Because he does it in college don’t mean he can do it in the NFL. We have seen many of them come through and flop. Many. Andrew Luck couldn’t carry a team to a Super Bowl. I want us to understand how crazy it is when we say some of the things that we say. We thought Andrew Luck was the best thing since we got a damn machine that started slicing bread. Since sliced bread. And where did he lead the Colts? Not to a Super Bowl. ... There is no parameter. There is no quick and easy understanding. There are so many unknown variables. We look at the arm and how strong a guy’s arm is and then say, oh, he can do it. You have to talk about so much more when you’re discussing the quarterback position.”

So, hypothetically speaking, let’s say the Cowboys stay where they currently are in the draft: No. 3. If the elite quarterbacks are off the board, do you trade down and get a couple of more picks? Or, do you take a player there regardless of position?

Irvin: “Game-changers. I take game-changers at No. 3. If I’ve got a Myles Garrett hanging around. Game-changer! I’m taking him at No. 3. If I don’t have a Myles Garrett, I still need a game-changer on defense. I’ve seen some mock drafts where they have the Cowboys drafting this tight end, who’s supposed to be a very good tight end. But, that’s not a game-changer in the Cowboys' game. You need a game-changer on defense, now. Somebody that’s going to get to the quarterback or somebody on the back end who stops the quarterback. ... I need a game-changer at No. 3, or I am moving back.”
