Salvation Army Volunteers Serve Thanksgiving Meal To Those In Need - News On 6

Some Tulsans spent their time off volunteering and helping provide a holiday meal to hundreds of people in need Thursday at the Salvation Army Center of Hope.

“We figured that we would spend some time with people that are probably feeling the strain of loneliness just as much as we are this year," said Caroline Jarvis.

Jarvis is from Australia and Thanksgiving is a new tradition for her since moving to Tulsa four years ago.

The holiday is normally spent with her in-laws, but this year she and her husband are spending the day at Salvation Army’s Center of Hope helping feed hundreds of people who wouldn’t have a holiday meal otherwise.

“There are people who are hungry who need the nourishment that’s given and provided today so it was really never a question of whether we would do the meal. It’s how would we do it so that it would be safe," said Major Mark Harwell.

Harwell is the Salvation Army Area Commander and said the help from volunteers like Jarvis is encouraging to see people giving back to our community.

"While we’re separated by those that we love normally it really is a way to still feel connected and to give and not just to give back, but you’re receiving as you’re giving,” said Jarvis.

The Salvation Army feeds lunch to hundreds of people daily at the Center of Hope and they are always looking for more volunteers. They said they are also in need of more bellringers to help with the holiday season.
