WISE dedicated to giving back via programs
BIG RAPIDS -- Many local nonprofit organizations are doing what they can to help families in need this holiday season, including Women's Information Service, Inc.
Jane Currie, executive director of WISE, said they have many programs in place to help their clients this season, and try to bring as much holiday spirit to those in need as possible.
"We try to always provide the hope that holidays bring us," she said. "Sometimes (our clients) don't have family around them, so we try to be that support system."
WISE is a nonprofit agency which provides advocacy and support services for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Mecosta, Osceola and Newaygo counties, including a 19-bed shelter for women and families.
Currie said one of the great programs they have for their clients this time of year is the Adopt-a-Family program, which involves a client family being assigned to people in the community who want to shop for gifts for the children of that family.
Currie explained participants in the Adopt-a-Family program receive the children's names, ages and a few gift ideas.
"We have a lot of success and our goal has been for many years that every family in our client base has something to open on Christmas," she said.
She added this year despite the challenges presented to people by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many people have signed up to participate in this program.
"This is an exceptional community," she said.
In addition to the Adopt-a-Family program, Currie said WISE will be participating in Giving Tuesday, on Dec. 1.
This day is an opportunity for people to raise funds, generate awareness and support WISE and the clients they serve, Currie said.
"Giving Tuesday is a great way to donate because it goes directly to our clients and services," she said.
Currie noted due to wanting to limit in-person contact in light of the coronavirus, the best way to help out now is through monetary donations, which can be done online at wiseagainstviolence.org/donate or by mailing a check to WISE at P.O. Box 1249, Big Rapids, MI 49307.
She said she understands not everyone is able to donate, but greatly appreciates any way people can help during this time of year.
"When families are fractured through domestic violence or sexual abuse, it can be a lonely time, so when individuals in our community come around, it really encourages them," Currie said. "It is a wonderful opportunity to give back."
