DULUTH, MN-- Volunteers of all ages spent their Thanksgiving at the DECC bright and early packing up meals for those in need.
"We're all committed to helping people, and that's at the crux of what we do," said Event Coordinator Monica Hendrickson.
The Twin Ports Thanksgiving Day Buffet, a 30-year tradition, had to make adjustments due to the pandemic.
Lisa Vogel has volunteered all 30 years of the event. She said, while this year was different, they became a well-oiled machine by the end of it.
"We had a significant increase in the amount of meals that we're delivering this year, which is understandable," said Vogel. "Then we had a decrease in the amount of volunteers."
Volunteers hit the road delivering 1,000 bagged lunches to organizations like CHUM and the Damiano Center and 2,300 hot meals to homes around the Twin Ports.
UPS, the Mayo Clinic Ambulance, St. Scholastica, and the 148th Fighter Wing all volunteered to deliver the meals.
"It feels great, there's a lot of people in need in our community," said UPS driver Julian Kycia. "For us, I think it makes us feel together as a group, as well as a community. So, it's really special."
Volunteers and organizers said keeping the tradition alive was important during a time like this.
"Holding the traditions is tough, but we'll get through this," Vogel said. "Everybody will get through it."
'Getting through it' all thanks to these volunteers.
