It's less than a week until Thanksgiving, and many families across the region are struggling to put food on the table. As the virus continues to keep many out of work, it's causing a financial strain for so many families.

"This is just a great way to give back to the community in a time that's been a challenge for many of us," said Dave Schrader of NRG Energy.

A number of organizations have been doing all they can to provide continued support as cases continue to rise.

NRG Energy partnered with Cumulus Radio for a food drive helping New Bethany Ministries of Bethlehem. Volunteers with the Christian organization CrossPoint also answered the call Saturday.

"We have wonderful people with great hearts, and all I need to do is make it known to them that we're doing something and right now, people just pitch right in," said Dwight Mikesell, lead pastor at CrossPoint Church.

Over 100 families in Allentown picked up holiday meals, thanks to St. Luke's Health Network's food distribution. The drive-thru event was designed to assist Allentown School District students as they continue virtual classes.

"We realize that there's a lot going on and folks are feeling a little bit anxious, so we're just trying to alleviate some of that anxiety and just push that caring message," said Jose Delagado, Raub Middle School's principal.

No matter what you're giving, where you're giving and who it's going to, Delgado says the reason for it all is simple.

"Let's make sure we're taking care of one another. Let's make sure we're building that beloved community. Let's make sure what we're doing first and foremost is looking after her one another," said Delgado.

In Berks County, a non-profit organization was also distributing Thanksgiving meals to families in need.

The group YouthBuild held the event in Reading outside the United Community Services building on North Front Street.

Thanksgiving meals were provided to more than 50 families. The meals included everything from the turkey to dessert.
