BIG RAPIDS — Two residents urged Mecosta County commissioners to pass a resolution prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine passports within the county.

“Vaccine passports," or vaccine certificates, are documents that show you were vaccinated against COVID-19 or recently tested negative for the virus, according to the Associated Press.

The certificates are still being developed, and how and whether they’ll be used could vary widely around the world. Experts say they should be free and available on paper, not just on apps, since not everyone has a smartphone.

In the U.S., federal officials say there are no plans to make them broadly mandatory, the AP reported.

Area residents Keith Wood and Michelle Mixa individually addressed the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners during the public comment portion of this week's meeting.

“I’m hearing hundreds, if not thousands, of doctors across the United States and world speak out against requiring vaccine passports,” Wood told commissioners, requesting the board write a resolution prohibiting the use of vaccine passports in Mecosta County.

“I would hope at least one of you would see the dire need for this,” he said.

Wood, noting he was unclear of the source he was citing, said 71% of Michiganders are against a vaccine passport, while 70% are pro-COVID vaccine, he said.

“If 70% of Michiganders are pro-vaccine and willing to get the jab,” Wood began to explain. “But 71% of Michiganders are against requiring to show papers to move about freely in our communities, state and country — then that should tell you something.”

Mixa also encouraged commissioners to ban COVID-19 vaccine passports. Mixa referred to a recent incidents occurring on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

On April 9, empty cruise ships were sent to St. Vincent to help transport thousands of people who evacuated their homes under the fiery glow of La Soufriere volcano, the AP reported.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves noted that the cruise ships and other islands would require evacuees to be vaccinated.

“I tell this story to stress the medical apartheid that will come as a result of these vaccine passports,” Mixa told the board. “People with the passport are allowed special privileges in society that those without don’t have the privilege to.”

No further action was taken.
