EL PASO, Texas — A single mother of four in Texas received a big boost from the El Paso community, as volunteers helped her remodel her home.
Karen Martinez bought her home 13 years ago and wanted to repair it, but time and money were scarce.
Volunteers stepped up and helped her repaint the home, KTSM reported. They also fixed the plumbing, replaced windows and remolded her bathroom, but Martinez said the biggest assist was repairs made to the roof, which has leaked for years, the television station reported.
Saturday, Martinez was joined by volunteers as she applied paint.
The repairs were made possible through Rebuilding Together El Paso, a nonprofit organization, and the Loretto Academy Challenge Program, KTSM reported.
Materials for the project were donated by several companies in the El Paso area who heard Martinez’s story and wanted to help.
“Her work in a fast-food restaurant, plus caring for her sister who fell ill, her father who fell ill, raising four children all of that together there was never time nor the money to put back into the house,” Sylvia Hernandez, co-director for Loretto Academy Challenge Program, told KTSM.
While her home is being repaired, Martinez and her family are staying in an area hotel, with the costs paid through donations, the television station reported.
Volunteers said they are looking forward to the day when Martinez can move her family back into their home.
“It’s not just a house, it’s somebody’s home were making it feel more homey for them,” Sophia Padilla told KTSM. “It’s something small, but it’s going to be life-changing for them.”
