By now, we’ve all seen plenty of mock drafts and player projections for the Detroit Lions in the 2021 NFL draft. With the selections coming mere days away now, it’s time to poll our own staff.
Several of our Lions Wire staff writers and analysts offered up their take on which player each wanted Detroit to draft. Everyone also provided one player they specifically did not want the Lions to select in the coming draft.
There was no boundary on the range, no limiting to the first round for either pick. Here is who each Lions Wire staffer chose in each direction:
Zack Moran
Want: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
Call me a sucker for the offensive line, but Sewell could solidify the offensive line for years to come and kick off this rebuild in the right way. He could help build a strong foundation that could set up the new regime’s plan either sticking with Jared Goff or taking a QB later down the road, but either way, he needs to stay upright and Sewell will make sure of that. Sure he needs some refinement in areas, but what he has going for him is his age and athleticism that will more than assist him in that process.
Do not want: Devonta Smith, WR, Alabama
There is no denying Smith has playmaking ability evident by his Heisman trophy, but his size leaves too many concerns on his durability transition to the NFL. If the Lions trade down and he is still available, it is a little more palatable, but not at 7. Hard seeing the first pick of the new regime being an undersized receiver where they are other quality available at that spot or later down the draft.
Derek Okrie
Want: Jaylen Twyman, DT, Pittsburgh
Lions fans always revert back to the draft where the team passed on Aaron Donald. Well, here is a chance to get a guy that played at the same school, wore the same number, same exact height, basically the same weight, and is a penetrating Defensive Tackle that we haven’t had in years. Is he Aaron Donald? No. I think the way Twyman looks up to Aaron Donald though will only motivate him at the next level to play a similar style.
He put up 40 bench press reps at his pro day, so the strength appears similar too. He’s a leader and a player I would love to see them draft in Rd 4 or 5.
Do not want: Jaylen Waddle, WR Alabama
I know he’s fast, but he just doesn’t seem like the No. 7 overall pick to me. I don’t mind the player, but I would prefer for the Lions to pass on the wide receiver position if there are other options with that top pick. If Pitts, Chase, or Smith are the best available players when it’s their time to select, I would prefer all of them over Waddle.
He could be a game-changer, but he also could be a small skill player that will never justify that high of a pick. I’d avoid him at No. 7, but also understand that if they take him and use him well, Waddle could be really fun to watch.
Max Gerber
Want: Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU
The Detroit Lions now have a starting quarterback in Jared Goff, a decent stable of running backs, a competent offensive line, and a Pro-Bowl tight end. All that is missing for the offense to be successful is a top-tier wide receiver. That’s where Ja’Marr Chase could make an impact.
With a potential run on quarterbacks in the first five picks of the draft and a few other players projected to be gone before Detroit picks, Chase could fall directly in their laps and the Lions would come away with this year’s top receiver prospect. Paired with veterans Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman as well as the up-and-coming Quintez Cephus, Detroit’s offense could be respectable in 2021.
Do not want: Any quarterback
The Lions swapped out Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff this offseason and made it clear that Goff will be the starter in 2021. While going from Stafford to Goff is a clear downgrade at the position, Goff is still a capable quarterback who did take a team to the Super Bowl just three years ago.
While there are plenty of talented quarterbacks available this year, the position is not one of need for the Lions. The No. 7 overall pick would be better spent on a wide receiver or linebacker. If Goff shows he isn’t the guy for this offense, the Lions could look for a quarterback next year.
Ty Finch
Want: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
I don’t expect Fields to be there at No. 7 when the Lions pick, but with the chatter surrounding Mac Jones and the 49ers and the Falcons reportedly trying to trade down, Fields is at least a realistic option if the Lions want him. Fields is a superb athlete and an accurate and patient passer.
In most other drafts I believe he’d be the consensus overall No. 1 pick, but with a generational talent and two other intriguing signal callers, Fields could be available. And when your team doesn’t have a capable QB on the roster – which the lions do not have – there may not be a better chance to grab your (hopeful) future star.
Do not want: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
This is simple. The allegations around Parsons are gross and I like rooting for the players on this team. Parsons would be hard to root for. The Lions are probably going to be bad the next two seasons, so I’d rather watch bad football with players who aren’t surrounded in controversy. Yes, the Lions need linebackers. Find them somewhere else.
Jeff Risdon
Want: Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU
The Lions want to play three safeties more than they play three LBs in Aaron Glenn’s defense, yet they have arguably the worst collection of safeties in the league currently on the roster. Moehrig offers the versatility to play any safety spot and do it well. He’s the dream pick for the 2nd round and worthy of trading up into the first to land in Detroit.
Do not want: Any running backs
The Lions are loaded at RB already. Last year’s second-rounder, D’Andre Swift, showed a lot of promise as both a runner and a receiver as a rookie. Jamaal Williams was a phenomenal pickup in free agency, a good starter in his own right. Kerryon Johnson, while lacking durability, is very good in his role in the committee.
Now factor in all the recent draft capital spent at RB by the old regime. There’s absolutely no need to use one of the team’s six picks on a player who almost certainly won’t crack the top three in the lineup.
