Two Twin Cities casinos will reopen May 26, with strict safety protocols planned for guests and employees.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community on Monday announced it will reopen Mystic Lake and Little Six Casinos using a phased approach following the health and safety guidelines of state and federal authorities. The casinos have been closed since March 18 to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“We … feel confident that we can welcome guests back to our enterprise and bring team members back to work in an environment that is safe for everyone,” said Angela Heikes, president and CEO of the community’s gaming enterprise, in a statement.

The initial reopening will be limited to slot machines and table game areas. Chairs have been removed from every other slot machine and half of the chairs have been removed from all tables and bars. Blackjack tables are limited to three guests and interaction points with employees have been reduced or separated by Plexiglas barriers.

All public areas, slot machines and tables will be cleaned and sanitized regularly. Guests can request a machine be cleaned by pressing a service button.

Building occupancy limits have been recalculated to accommodate physical distancing. The number of guests on the floor will be monitored through door counts and surveillance.

All guests and employees will be required to wear masks and thermal temperature scanning will be conducted at all entrances. Guests showing signs of illness will be asked to leave. Employees will undergo a health screening prior to each shift.

Dining options will be limited to pre-packaged items, and the buffet and other sit-down restaurants will remain closed. Concerts and entertainment events have been postponed to later dates.

The hotel will reopen in phases as the demand for rooms returns and many hotel amenities like the spa and pool will remain closed along with the Mystic Lake Center resort.

“Our tribe has many enterprises, some of which have reopened already,” said the Community’s chairman Keith Anderson, referring to The Meadows at Mystic Lake golf course, the Organics Recycling Facility in Shakopee and the ice rinks at Dakotah! Sport and Fitness in Prior Lake. “We have learned how to make the proper modifications to ensure safety and will use what we have learned when reopening Mystic Lake and Little Six.”
