Gyms and more are reopening today in Ohio. Here's what you need to know. - The Cincinnati Enquirer

sambitasa.blogspot.com

Tuesday marks another day of reopenings in Ohio, following offices, retail stores, restaurants, hair salons and more.

Here's what's allowed to open today:

  • swimming pools
  • gyms, fitness centers and yoga studios
  • dance studios
  • non-contact and limited-contact sports leagues such as tennis, golf, baseball and softball
  • conditioning and skills training for high school sports
  • bowling alleys
  • mini-golf centers
  • Bureau of Motor Vehicles deputy registrar offices

Each has to follow sector-specific safety protocols. Those sets of rules have three things in common: keeping 6 feet of distance between people (which could reduce capacity), masks for employees when feasible and frequent hand washing and cleaning.

As happened with retail, restaurants and others, not all businesses will reopen Tuesday. And they will also have to follow any rules and regulations put in place by local authorities.

BMV offices

The state is encouraging people to access as many services as possible online. Services available at OPlates.com include buying a temporary tag for your car, renewing a vehicle registration and ordering new license plates.

If your driver's license or ID card has expired since March 9, there's no need to get a new one anytime soon.

The state has extended the expiration date for licenses and ID cards until Dec. 1 or 90 days after the current state of emergency ends, whichever happens first.

If you do have to go in-person, it's recommended to check in online beforehand at bmv.ohio.gov. Then, when you arrive at the BMV, you'll assume your spot in line as if you had checked in earlier in-person.

BMV offices will resume knowledge and skills tests but road tests are still on hold.

Gyms and fitness centers

Members and clients must check in upon arrival. Equipment such as exercise bikes and elliptical trainers must be set up at least 6 feet apart.

The Cincinnati Sports Club is among those choosing to wait a little longer to reopen. When the club opens June 1, not all its facilities will be open.

“There are going to be some things that the governor says we can do, and we’re going to choose not to do them,” Mary Frank, the club's marketing and sales director, said. “We will not open our shower facilities or general locker room areas. We believe it just isn’t the right time.”

Gyms that have additional operations such as retail or food service will have to follow the sector-specific guidance for those, too.

For the 16-acre Cincinnati Sports Club, that means following up to eight or nine government guidelines at a time. This includes those pertaining to spas, salons, retail stores, restaurants, group workout facilities, child care, massage facilities and gyms.

“Exercise is medicine,” Frank said. “We’re looking forward to being able to offer our members that medicine, to help them in the ways that we can again.”

Sports

The state has released guidance for youth and adult recreational baseball, softball, tennis and golf.

Under requirements for adult and youth baseball and softball, players, coaches and spectators must keep at least 6 feet of distance from others while off the field. Coaches and athletes must wear face coverings when not playing. High fives and handshake lines are off-limits as are shared water coolers.

Similar rules apply for tennis court, golf course and mini-golf operators. Those businesses are also required to take steps to limit shared equipment and congregating at those facilities. Players must use their own tennis or golf balls and shouldn't touch others' equipment.

Equipment must be sanitized before, during and after play.

High school athletes for all sports can start skills training and conditioning. Tournaments, games, and competitions for contact sports are still prohibited for now.

Swimming pools

Pools have to limit capacity so there is room for patrons from different households to be 6 feet apart – in and out of the water. Many will use physical barriers such as lane lines in the water, chairs on the deck or tape on floors to ensure social distancing.

High-use surfaces must be cleaned every two hours.

Face coverings are recommended for activity outside the pool, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns they should not be worn in water.
