Report: Jets want to extend Jamal Adams, not trade him - 247Sports

New York Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams has been the talk of trade rumors for quite some time. A Thursday report from longtime NFL reporter Gary Myers suggested that there was friction between Adams and the team due to the two sides not being able to reach a contract extension. Myers even told ESPN San Antonio that the Baltimore Ravens were a potential destination for him.

Myers reported that he does not see an extension happening in this offseason. While it may be unlikely, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network says that is the team’s goal.

“The Jets do, at some point, intend to extend Jamal Adams and do not have any intention right now of trading him,” Garafolo said on Thursday’s edition of NFL Now. “Really, when you look at the draft and what’s happening with first-round picks when you have that fifth-year option on top of it, it’s rare for a guy to get an extension this early. So the Jets really want Adams to know that they want him to be a part of their future. It just might take some time to get there.”

With the Jets picking up his fifth-year option, Adams has two years, $13.4 million remaining on his contract.

Last season, Adams was angered by reports that the Jets had been taking calls on his availability at the NFL trade deadline, and trade rumors surrounding Adams have not died down since. Last month, however, general manager Joe Douglas maintained that he wants Adams to be a Jet for the rest of his career, and plans to have conversations with Adams and his representatives in the near future.

"My stance on Jamal hasn't changed," said Douglas while talking about the Jets' NFL Draft haul. "At some point, we're going to get with him and his representatives. ... He's an outstanding player. We would like him to be here a long time."

On several otherwise hapless Jets teams, Adams has been not only the best player the franchise has had, but one of the best safeties in the NFL outright. Adams has made the Pro Bowl two-straight seasons, and followed up a Second Team All-Pro season in 2018 with his first-ever First Team All-Pro season in 2019. Adams made 75 combined tackles and had a career-high 6.5 sacks, while also scoring two defensive touchdowns on a Pick-Six and strip-and-score respectively.

One of Adams’ prominent Jets teammates believes the idea of trading him is not a good one.

"To me, I wasn't too worried about that," linebacker C.J. Mosley said two weeks ago in an interview with ESPN NFL Nation Jets reporter Rich Cimini. "That would be a crazy move."

Mosley went on to list a couple of reasons why he believes it would be crazy.

"First of all, he's one of the leaders on the team," Mosley said. "That's first and foremost. He brings that extra energy whether guys want it or not. Sometimes you might be tired or not feeling good, but as soon as he steps on the field, you're going to hear that voice and he'll be flying around. To have that presence in the secondary, a guy that can make plays in the passing game and also plays in the backfield -- in the box -- that's always exciting."

Adams was selected by the Jets with the No. 6 overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft following a decorated college career at LSU. He spent three seasons with the Tigers, amassing 209 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, two sacks and five interceptions over 36 career games, garnering second-team All-America honors as a junior before declaring for the NFL Draft.
