I agree with the Guest Commentary that exposes the shortcomings of the SMART train. Even with the advantages of a large population, flat terrain, existing stations and a terminus that serves a state-wide job center SMART is grossly underperforming.

In theses days of COVID-19, train and subway cars have been exposed as vectors for community spread of the virus.

People want personalized transportation. Our corridor offers the opportunity to accommodate solar, human and electric powered forms of micro-transit along with recreational benefits. Let’s rail bank the tracks and build a multi-purpose trail.

John Leopold has been a driving force in keeping the pipe dream alive for a fixed-rail system on our precious corridor. Millions have been spent maintaining 100-year-old tracks. He has promoted an expensive, substandard trail that is non-continuous or uniformly protected. It’s time for voters to decide the future of our transportation alternatives. Elect Manu Koenig for supervisor.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
