BROOKLYN, MI -- Will the big, three-day camping and country music festival take place this summer?
Will 40,000 fans of Faster Horses 2020 be able to gather each day despite the novel coronavirus pandemic to see headliners Luke Combs, Jason Aldean and Thomas Rhett and numerous other stars on two stages?
As reported on Monday by MLive, promoter Live Nation has said in emails to fans that a decision to carry on with the festival could be made as late as two weeks before the event, which is scheduled for July 17-19 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
After we posted the story we received several emails from readers. All of them echoed the same sentiment that a decision needs to be made soon.
Some of them are on payment plans for camping sites at the festival and wonder about refunds. Others are concerned about how social distancing due to COVID-19 would work during an outdoor festival. One Brooklyn resident even said they do not want fans in the community.
In addition, some fans are understanding of the dilemma facing promoters.
Here are some of the emails we received:
“Live Nation repeatedly has said they’re proceeding as planned and are even still selling tickets for the event. I’m anxious & excited to still go and for it to still happen. But they could possibly be bound by limitations and restrictions via a state order. Hopefully by July at the latest, we will be able to participate in group outdoor events like Faster Horses & it will happen as planned! If you ask me, ticket holders are probably smartest to cancel RV or hotel reservations BEFORE deposit deadlines. They can just rebook closer to the event, once the state’s order progresses to allow these type of outdoor events. It would be great to hear positivity and support for this incredible event (& all the time, money and work that they put into it), instead of complaints. They seem to have made it pretty clear they want to hold it and are waiting for the progress that will allow that to happen, just like the rest of us!!” -- Laurie
“I have attended the event the last 3 years and it’s a fantastic time. However, the way they have handled this by keeping all guests in the dark and the possibility of a 14-day time frame for an update is ridiculous. I need to effectively communicate with my employer regarding any time off or vacation time, and I don’t want to waste annual leave on something that might not happen and I won’t know a couple weeks in advance. Personally, the event should be canceled hands down. ... I do not plan on attending this year either way...” -- name not provided
“I have gone to four years of FHF concerts. I am really disappointed that Live Nation hasn’t given any updates about Faster Horses Festival during the pandemic. I realize that they ‘need to wait’ but to me, the writing is so clearly on the wall. I strongly believe that this year’s concert should be canceled. People WILL continue to spread COVID-19 at the concert. People are WAY to close to each other in non-pandemic years - both in camping and standing at the stage areas. I hope Live Nation does the right thing and allows refunds or putting money towards 2021 reservations.” -- Julie
"Yes, it needs to be postponed!!!!” -- Mary
“I reached out yesterday too regarding the festival, and was met with the same email in your article. After pushing more asking if they’ll refund due to canceling because of COVID because of the financial state Michigan is in..... They said the policies are whatever they are and they won’t have more info until closer to the festival, and they can’t make the decision whether refunds will happen or not. Just sad. I’d still go if they still hold it, but (it’s) unfortunate that they’re not giving any type of update. The payment plans are done on May 15th, so everyone will pay in full with no updates and then probably be told they won’t get a refund.” -- name not provided
“This will be our second year going to Faster Horses and I couldn’t agree more with you. We work all year to afford this event and even then struggle. The event is pricey. They should give us more news on updates. This pandemic is scary.. Now, I also am pregnant and very scared of attending of things have just barely let up.. it’s a huge event but the money put on is way too high.. I’m torn completely but wanted to thank you for your efforts to get us an answer faster!” -- Whitney
“I also emailed them as I am immune compromised person and wanted a refund since they’re was no word on cancelling it. They in no way can ensure my safety!! I also got the exact same form mail from the festival and not live nation. I think it is appalling to think they would even have it, and it will be a hotbed for a spike in this disease.” -- name not provided
“I live in Brooklyn, Michigan and personally I would not want over 40,000 people coming into our little town and spreading the virus. Overwhelming our grocery store and others. I highly doubt there is going to be a lot of hand washing, mask wearing and staying 6 foot apart from each other. This is just going to be a breeding ground for this virus and infect our small village!! Please be considerate and cancel this event!!!” -- LeeAnn
“So you asked if people are going to attend faster horses 2020. Hell yes I am going to attend if they have it. Either way if they postpone it or have it on their regular schedule days I will be going. It is the 8th year that I will have attended. I do not understand some people, if you take precautions and keep on your daily hygiene and wash your hands you should be okay. People that are locking themselves up are going to have a low and I mean very low immunity after they get out of this lock down. I believe faster horses should keep the dates and if people want to go, then go; if not and you are too afraid, then stay home. But no matter what my whole gang is going either way. #fasterhorses2020. I totally understand how people are feeling when it comes to their money but faster horses will do what is right for their customers. People need to understand that either they will give you a refund or they will just hold onto it for next year’s festival. People need to relax.” -- Amanda
“This will be my 6th faster horses (if I attend). I have not bought my ticket yet for two reasons. #1 not sure if they would still hold the event and #2 not sure about the safety with so many people. Social distancing would be nearly impossible. I do not use the camping facilities but do have a reservation made in a neighboring town.” -- Linda
Live Nation promoters have been relatively silent during the pandemic, only posting sporadically on social media.
We sent them an email on Monday with reps replying: “We don’t have new news as of right now. As soon as we do we will share with you.”
We followed up on Tuesday, but received no response.
What are your thoughts on Faster Horses? Will you attend this year if it is allowed to take place as scheduled? Do you think it should be postponed?
