CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Thousands continue to file for unemployment, and food pantry lines around the country are sometimes miles long. Many are struggling to find that next meal or even enough shampoo for their families

Like everyone, Kelly Alexander saw the news and wasn’t going to sit around and do nothing, so she created the Cape Coral Food Box on Facebook.

“The inspiration was how can we help just a few families and with that the support from the community has been wonderful,” Alexander said.

With the help of the community, Alexander donates essential goods like diapers, shampoo, laundry detergent, and more. The group also donates grocery gift cards to families who seek out their help anonymously.

“They reach out to ask for assistance and within 24 hours we are delivering a box to them,” Alexander said. 

The entire system is word of mouth and what started as helping three families has now grown to over 50 families.

“We can’t help them for a month obviously but maybe if we can help them for a day or for a week to help [get] food on the table for their families. That is what we are here for,” Alexander said.

But it’s not just the families getting something out of the gifts.

“The most rewarding part is the family's reaction. They need us,” Alexander said.

And the families that have been helped have shown their appreciation the best way they can.

“We have gotten lots of letters. Thank you letters and it just breaks your heart that we can help them that day that is awesome,” Alexander said.
