Small religious gatherings will be allowed in New York. Here are details

ALBANY - Religious gatherings of no more than 10 people will be allowed in New York starting Thursday so long as they maintain social distancing and participants wear masks.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced slight loosening of the restrictions on houses of worship Wednesday amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying he hopes the services can help people better cope with the troubling times.

The state will also allow drive-in and parking lot services.

"I understand their desire to get back to religious ceremonies as soon as possible. I’m a former altar boy," Cuomo said at his daily coronavirus briefing in Albany.

Large gatherings are restricted to phase 4 of any region's reopening plans after New York's stay-at-home order was established March 22.

Upstate regions started to have enter the first of the four phases of reopening last week, but it could be more than a month before any large gatherings, including regular religious services could be reestablished.

When will high school sports return? National guidelines provide a road map

The governing body that writes the rules for the majority of high school athletics in the United States has released guidelines that provide a road map for a return to sports amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Federation of State High School Associations released a 16-page document Tuesday that outlines a safe return to high school sports. The document lists precautionary measures that must take place before any contact play resumes and says that until a valid treatment or vaccine is available, or herd immunity is reached, preventive measures such as social distancing and face covering should be used if practices or games are to take place in the fall.

Aug. 24 is the target date for the start of high school sports in Section V and the state.

The Indian Community of Rochester has come together to support Rochesterians in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is coming from the heart as a way for each one of us to serve the community,” said O.P. Gupta, of Pittsford, who is the lead coordinator for a newly-formed initiative of the Hindu Temple of Rochester, Gurdwara of Rochester and the India Community Center of Rochester.

Called COVID-19: Rochester Indian-American Community Fund, the fund has raised over $32,000 in 10 days to support pandemic-related service projects, like the delivery of 100 bags of groceries this week to the South Wedge Food Program.

State: Unemployment backlog at 44,212, with 7,580 unpayable

ALBANY – After months of handling a tsunami of unemployment claims so severe that its commissioner said measuring it was akin to measuring the ocean, the state Department of Labor on Wednesday released data about those who are still awaiting checks.

It took them one weekend to compile the numbers.

The tally found that 44,212 of the more than 1.2 million applications the department received before April 22 have yet to be paid, and 7,580 might never be paid because they lack key information.

Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said the wait is not over for those who have been stuck in the backlog the longest and have yet to receive a check.
