NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans need edge rusher Harold Landry’s game to evolve in 2021. Solid production has been Landry’s modus operandi since coming to Nashville three years ago.

If his future is to continue in Tennessee, Landry’s game needs an update.

The Titans pass rush experienced significant upgrades this offseason. The depth is also substantially improved. When general manager Jon Robinson traded up into the second round at significant cost to acquire Landry, the hope was that he would be a focal point of this unit for year to come.

The Boston College product has been the best of bad option in the last two years instead.

Landry’s elusive second move

Known for his speed rush, Landry’s talent and primary weaponry has carried him thus far. He appeared in 15 games as a rookie and had 4.5 sacks and 18 quarterback pressures (tied for third and second on the team, respectively). In 2019, Landry started all 16 games and led the team with a career-high nine sacks. Tennessee’s postseason run that season (3 games) saw him rack up a team-best eight quarterback pressures.

Opposing offensive lines seemed to figure Landry out in 2020.

“What I told Harold is that I took his fast ball away,” said Titans outside linebacker Ryan Crow. “He’s a speed dip guy. I think everyone who watches his film throughout the league realizes he’s a speed dip guy. So, the conversation with him was ‘You can’t use that in camp. You’ve got to find something else, make some new mistakes, learn some other moves, try them, see if they work and then kind of create that second and third pitch.'”

Landry’s 37 hurries were the most of any player on the Titans last year by far.

He finished Top 10 in that category after being Top 25 in 2019. It is, however, important to note that eight of those hurries came in Week 17 against the futile four-win Houston Texans who did not play star left tackle Laremy Tunsil against Tennessee.

Crow has been with the Titans since Landry’s rookie year in various roles. With Shane Bowen being promoted full-time to defensive coordinator this offseason, Crow is taking a unique approach to being the primary outside linebackers coach.

The Titans will have some business decisions to make ahead of the 2022 season. Crow is making his best effort to ensure that Landry is one of them.
