NEW ULM — Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha talked about the value of unity at the Brown County DFL picnic/fundraiser at Hermann Heights Park Tuesday.

“Unity is a big, persuasive lever. Human beings want to be unified,” said Blaha. “That’s the message we need to hear. Governor Tim Walz uses it when he says ‘One Minnesota.’ We’re willing to come together to get things done. That’s what holds us together.”

She asked people if they could imagine working through the COVID-19 pandemic with another team.

“Compare our leadership to another party’s leadership. It’s quite a stark difference,” said Blaha.

“Oh sure, some want to fight,” Blaha said. “Believe science is a real thing. These are important issues. We all need to get in on climate change. Every single job we have now will do something incredible for the world. You’re doing tremendous work.”

Blaha said the State Auditor’s office oversees more than $40 billion in local government spending and just this year, picked up overseeing more than $20 billion in federal funds that the state of Minnesota spends.

In addition, she said her office does examinations, audits, investigations, legal compliance checks, provides direct support with training and answers to questions and provides financial software for small government units. It also provides analysis to help people make fact-based decisions.

“Local government is one of the last places where you can get things done for your neighbors,” she said. “When things get tough at the federal and state level, we still have local government. If we didn’t have that, our hospitals and schools would close.”

Blaha said she likes her job because she gets to protect her neighbors.

She urged Minnesota State Fair goers to not miss crop art, made of Minnesota-grown seeds, stems and other plant parts, with the talent, humor and creativity of Minnesotans in the Agriculture Horticulture Building.

“Minnesota is the only state that does crop art,” said Blaha. “Don’t miss the messages written in some of the art. It builds respect for farmers, something they don’t always get. If you go, be safe and stop at the DFL booth and say hi.”

Blaha thanked fellow Democrats who retrieved her personal items from a vehicle she was riding in that was involved in a crash at Farmfest several weeks ago.

“Democrats will be there for you when you need them,” Blaha said. “Thanks to evasive action of a semi driver, nobody was badly hurt.”

Blaha said she was impressed with the care she received at Carris Health-Redwood Hospital.

“What a beautiful place it was. It’s gorgeous. It’s big. It looked like a four-star hotel. Everybody was just tremendous to us,” said Blaha.
