A video supposedly showing President Joe Biden being rebuffed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) after offering to answer questions at an event has garnered more than 400,000 views.
The clip purports to show Pelosi being heard saying "No, we don't want him to talk," after Biden offered to answer questions during an event.
The Claim
The footage is from the House Democratic Caucus' 2021 Issues Conference in March.
"I'm happy to take questions if that's what I'm supposed to do, Nance, whatever you want me to do," Biden said.
The clip shows Pelosi on screen before her image is replaced by an overlay, and then a voice is heard, which people have claimed is Pelosi, saying: "Am I on? No, we don't want him to talk."
A version of the clip has been watched more than 400,000 times at time of writing. The video gained attention after it was retweeted by actor James Woods on Twitter from an account called @lonewolfy777. A watermark on the clip shows the Twitter handle @Michael_Clive.
The Facts
The footage in the clip is from the House Democratic Caucus' 2021 Issues Conference.
Looking at uploads of this from the time, Biden did say: "I'm happy to take questions if that's what I'm supposed to do, Nance, whatever you want me to do," after concluding his remarks. However, there is then no subsequent audio from Pelosi and the transmission cuts shortly after.
The Associated Press reported at the time that pool reporters were allowed to attend the introductory remarks made by Biden, but the session was then closed to the press before the president took questions from House Democrats. The Associated Press reported that it confirmed Biden took questions, which included one on systemic racism and one regarding the child tax credit.
The additional audio purportedly from Pelosi cannot be heard in full versions of Biden's remarks from the event shared online.
A version of the video which is being spread was shared on YouTube, from an account named "Trump Still Speaks."
This had the title: "Biden Cut OFF - The Version you DIDN'T SEE! Pelosi: 'No, we don't want him to talk.'"
It was uploaded on March 7 and has more than 50,000 views at time of writing. The description of the video reads: "This is Conservative Satire and Production, not for the timid or Free speech haters. America's Great Impressionist & Character Specialist. Watch Michael Clive's New Demo. It'll blow your mind!"
It then linked to a video detailing more work from Clive.
A pinned comment on that video, from the uploader, said: "** This is Political Satire ** Michael Clive is an American Actor, Comedian & Voice Artist with 30+ years' work from The Simpsons to The Stern Show. This more Conservative humor may seem odd because the media has only promoted Democrat/Leftist production/humor from Leftist performers/comedians/singers for decades."
Michael Clive, also known as Michael or Mike Kaminski, is a voiceover and impression artist. According to his website and IMDb page, he featured in "The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special" performing a Homer Simpson impression.
The "Trump Still Speaks" YouTube channel includes other impressions from Clive.
The channel's description states: "America's Great Impressionist & Character Specialist goes OFF-Script to provide topical Audio satire & production for Trump fans and more. Over 30 years in the industry, he does hundreds of other voices, but this channel focuses on political figures and 'Trump monologues'.
"Comedian, Michael Clive takes on News, Hollywood, Politics, Entertainment and more. Unique Parodies & Colorful Commentary."
There are several other Pelosi imitation videos uploaded, alongside other political parodies. Impressions of former President Donald Trump are a regular feature of the channel.
In comments to Newsweek over email, Clive said: "Yes, that's me, imitating Nancy Pelosi but that Twitter version has been edited. The original is labeled satire at the end and in the YouTube description.
"There are many more here, including faux Trump Press statements, more Pelosi and others. They're a sort of creative commentary to make a point or alternate message that people might want to hear/see.
"A type of political satire that sounds realistic and conceivable instead of the goofy, silly stuff so common."
Clive said sometimes people assume they are real, if they do not read the text giving context.
Newsweek has contacted the White House and Pelosi's office for comment.
The Ruling
False.
