There’s a bold position switch the Tennessee Vols need to consider making this fall.

The Vols are currently in the midst of a four-man quarterback battle between Harrison Bailey, Joe Milton, Hendon Hooker, and Brian Maurer.

So far, it appears that Maurer is trailing behind in the battle. Maurer has gone last in quarterback reps the past two practices, which is a good indicator that the redshirt sophomore is probably not going to emerge as the winner in this battle.

While this isn’t totally unexpected, it likely means that Maurer won’t be seeing the field much in 2021.

That’s something that needs to change.

Maurer is a great athlete who can make plays in the open field. He’s too talented to be sitting on the bench as the No. 4 quarterback on the Vols’ depth chart.

So why not find a way to get Maurer on the field?

And why not find that way by trying Maurer at wide receiver? You know, kind of like Butch Jones did with Jauan Jennings — one of the more famous quarterbacks turned wide receivers in recent Vol history.

Maurer has the size to play wide receiver (6-foot-3/205 lbs). He has the speed, too. Maurer reportedly ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.5 range (per VolQuest) as a high school recruit. That’s quite a bit faster than Jennings, who ran a 4.72 during the pre-draft process this past winter.

Brian Maurer can be a huge asset to the Vols’ football program — even if it’s not at quarterback.

Tennessee needs their most explosive players on the field as often as possible. Maurer is one of those players. Josh Heupel can’t let him go to waste.
