Everything you need to visit Canada (it's more than just your passport) - North Country Public Radio

Canada is open, but don't arrive at the border unprepared.

Monday marks the long-awaited reopening of the Canadian border to American travelers.

But crossing the border will not be as easy as it was before the pandemic. Visitors will need to upload proof of vaccination and get a COVID-19 test, or be turned back.

Although Canada is once again allowing Americans to visit, they shouldn't expect to show up at the border with a passport and breeze through like the days of old.

Crossing the border is going to require a lot more planning now, and aspiring visitors will need a few things. Check the Canadian government’s digital guide for assistance.

First, knock the dust off your passport or passport card and make sure it has not expired during the pandemic.

Next, get your official CDC proof of COVID-19 vaccination card. Only vaccinated Americans are allowed to enter Canada under the new rules.

However, the good news according to Ottawa-based epidemiologist Patrick Saunders-Hastings is that vaccinated travelers will be exempt from the Canada’s otherwise mandatory post-arrival quarantine.

"You should be able to present your vaccination, enter into Canada, and go about your business as normal,” Saunders-Hastings told NCPR.

But, Americans crossing the border will need to do more than just present their physical vaccine card. Proof of vaccination will also need to be digitally uploaded into a government system called ArriveCAN, either via smartphone app or web portal.

In the ArriveCAN app, prospective travelers will also be asked to upload passport information and note the border checkpoint at which they will be crossing. In some cases the Canadian designations differ from what the U.S. government uses, so double check the name if any issues arrive.

However, that is not the end of your administrative journey. Even vaccinated travelers are still required to get tested for COVID-19 before entering Canada.

That test needs to be administered no more than 72 hours before your arrival at the border. Not every test provider guarantees results that fast, so make sure to ask about delivery times before scheduling an appointment.

On top of that, only certain types of tests are being accepted by Canada. Notably, rapid antigen tests are not among those. A list of approved tests is available online

The negative test result, from a test administered less than 72 hours before traveling, will then need to be uploaded into ArriveCAN, alongside passport data and proof of vaccination.

In return for all that, you will be allowed to freely move about Canada. You may also be subjected to randomized  COVID-19 testing post-arrival as well.

Over the weekend, officers with the Canadian Border Services Agency reached a tentative deal on a contract dispute that slowed traffic to a crawl.

Adblock test (Why?)
