Quite a lot of talent from the Ravens’ offense departed at the conclusion of the 2020 season, leaving behind 3,237 offensive snaps. These snaps will need replaced and it was part of Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta’s job to find those to do the replacing. Let’s break down each position to see what’s changed for the Ravens.
Note: Snap counts will be broken down as offensive snaps/defensive snaps/ special teams snaps.
Quarterback
Robert Griffin III — 61/0/0
The loss of Griffin III was mostly due to cutting him returning nearly $2 million in cap savings, which the Ravens needed this offseason to replenish other areas with skill and depth. With only 61 offensive snaps in 2020, the Ravens won’t need to worry about replacing his snaps. They’ll be allowing both QB Trace McSorley and QB Tyler Huntley to compete for the No. 2 role as this season begins to ramp up.
Running Back
Mark Ingram — 160/0/0
A most beloved Raven was released this offseason for much of the same reason as RGIII. The cap savings were critical, and, his replacement was already on the roster. Not to sleight Ingram but the Ravens won’t find trouble in replacing Ingram with RB J.K. Dobbins and RB Gus Edwards both on the 2021 roster.
Wide Receiver
Willie Snead IV — 535/0/4
Dez Bryant — 129/0/0
Chris Moore — 14/0/42
A significant amount of snaps are lost here as Snead saw action in over 50% of all offensive snaps in 2020. In all, this amounts to 678 offensive snaps and 46 special teams snaps. Fortunately for the Ravens, the team drafted two wide receivers in the 2021 NFL Draft and signed veteran WR Sammy Watkins to replace the departures. What may be the greatest loss in this trio is replacing Moore’s special teams prowess. He was frequently a contributor on coverage teams and even earned the nickname “Scoop and Score Moore” for scoring two touchdowns on coverage plays.
Offensive Line
OT Orlando Brown Jr. — 1026/0/84
C Matt Skura — 661/0/82
OT D.J. Fluker — 531/0/79
OT Will Holden —30/0/4
Only one player for the Baltimore Ravens participated in 100% of offensive snaps in 2020 and that man was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. The loss of Brown Jr. is hoped to be unsubstantial as the Ravens signed OT Alejandro Villanueva months later.
As for the rest, a few departures will be replaced with the Ravens signing OG Kevin Zeitler, moving OL Bradley Bozeman to center and left guard having fierce competition between Ben Powers, Ben Cleveland and others.
Overall, this is where the Ravens lost the most snaps and thankfully the organization recognized the losses early and rectified the issue by the draft’s end.
Tight End
Luke Willson — 75/0/26
Sean Culkin 15/0/0
With TE Nick Boyle’s expected return, the Ravens are in good shape at the tight end position. After all, both Willson and Culkin saw action in Week 11 and beyond as Boyle suffered a season-ending injury in Week 10 against the New England Patriots.
The Ravens offseason plan really shows calculation with offseason moves to avoid faltering on offense. Whether it was signing veterans, drafting replacements or allowing players already on the roster to compete for the vacancies, virtually every hole has been replaced.
