When I offered my sister a coffee plant, she turned me down. I was surprised, since she and her husband are big coffee drinkers.
“Why don’t you want one?” I asked her.
“Because I’d have to water it,” she answered.
Come to think of it, her idea of plants is those made of silk or plastic. Fake ones, that is. But don’t even fake plants need an occasional dusting?
I’ve garnered a whole bunch of real plants, and yes, it is time-consuming to make sure they get the water they need. In fact, the other day I mused about how my flower-loving mother kept all her plants watered.
“Oh, yeah,” I remembered. “She had my sister and me to do the work.”
Water is a natural substance our human bodies need as well. God provided rivers to water the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:10), and I’m sure Adam and Eve retrieved the water they needed from them, too.
Besides water, we need God as well. Psalm 63:1-2 says, “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.”
Similarly, Psalm 42:1 says, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God.”
In the New Testament, John 4:5-28 tells the story of a Samaritan woman who came to a well to get water. Jesus asked her to give Him a drink, but she said she didn’t have any way to do that. Jesus then told her He could give her “living water,” so she would never thirst again. In other words, He offered her redemption and everlasting life. What wonderful water!
As a result, we will one day enter Heaven, where a “river will flow from the Throne of God” (Revelation 22:1).
Let’s thank God for all the water He provides us.
