REED CITY — Every day at Happy Tails Pet Grooming is a new, unique and, sometimes challenging, experience for Misty Hodges.

For more than a decade, that is among the many things she said she enjoys about owning her own pet-grooming business.

Hodges said she has been an animal-lover since her youth and always had some type of furry friend roaming around when she was growing up.

“Me and animals get along well,” Hodges said. “It’s always one animal — cat, dog, horses — something.”

As time progressed, her passion and love for caring for animals kept growing.

After landing her first job as a pet groomer, her desire to remain in the business reached the point where she felt that she needed to create her own.

“In 2007, I opened up my own business and have just been kind of doing it on my own since,” Hodges said.

There are a multitude of things about running Happy Tails that give her pride when she unlocks and opens the doors each morning. Above all, the customers who have bolstered her shop over time take top priority.

“What I enjoy most is to see the peoples’ faces when I’ve done their dogs up and cut their hair,” Hodges said. “When I’m able to bring out a dog that looks like a scruff-muffet and make it look totally different, that’s what I like doing.”

Hodges said this is the time of year in which many of her return clients book their appointments for the next few months.

As it stands, demand for Hodges’ services are on the rise — she is booked through October.

“Usually by November or December, my next year is pretty full,” Hodges said,” Hodges said. “I’m usually three-to-four months ahead of schedule. That’s why most people that are my repeat clients make their appointments for the whole year.”

Hodges said it’s not uncommon for a new customer looking to book an appointment at Happy Tails to be put on a waiting list.

“I do anywhere from eight to 15 dogs a day,” Hodges said.
