Report: Warriors want to keep Bender, but teams eyeing him - Comcast SportsNet Bay Area

There's currently an enormous cloud of uncertainty hovering over the NBA, but on Saturday, some sunshine broke through and provided the Warriors with some needed clarification.

It will be a critical offseason for Golden State, and the Warriors now know what are its two most important dates. The league announced that the 2020 NBA Draft -- in which Golden State is guaranteed to have a top-five pick -- will be held on Oct. 16. Additionally, free agency will begin at 3 p.m. (Pacific) on Oct. 18., with a moratorium on announcing contract agreements lasting from Oct. 19-23.

There is, however, a third crucial date for the Warriors, and they reportedly got clarification on that as well. According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, Golden State's $17.2 million traded player exception (TPE) will expire on Oct. 24.

The TPE -- which the Warriors received as part of the Andre Iguodala trade with the Memphis Grizzlies last summer -- permits Golden State to absorb a player's salary up to $17.2 million. It originally was scheduled to expire on July 7, but with the season calendar extended due to the coronavirus pandemic, that deadline was pushed back.

So, the Warriors will have 36 hours after the conclusion of the free-agency moratorium in which to utilize the TPE -- the same as it was with the previous deadline. They can't announce any trades prior to that 36-hour period, though they will be able to negotiate with other teams during that time.

With the huge TPE, a top-five draft pick and reports of interest from free-agent veterans, the Warriors are going to have a lot packed into a week that, if capitalized on, could vault the franchise back into championship contention for many years to come. They have to figure out how to accomplish that, and now they know by when.
