Francisca Diaz, age 9, joined her sister Teresita Equay Diaz who organized a protest Saturday night against an alleged incident that happened earlier in the day at a “Black Life Matters” protest in Park Rapids. The Diaz’ sisters are members of the Pine Point community on the White Earth reservation.

Teresita said seeing what she described as a “very disturbing video” of two young boys throwing liquid at the “Black Lives Matter”protestors today and laughing as they drove by led her to start her own protest.

“I felt disgusted,” she said.“I want people to understand that our skin color does not define who we are as a person. I want people to understand that we are treated differently because of our color. We are. That’s happening today and I don’t want it to happen any more. I want people to love. I want people to be happy, not hate, not be racist.”

“My sign means all people should be treated the same way and we all have the same skin but we’re just darker,” Francisca said.

Some people passing by honked in support of the group, while a few yelled obscenities and derogatory statements about Native Americans.

After one of these incidents Fancisca who is in fourth grade and was wearing her Regalia for the protest said “I’m scared. Are they going to hurt us?”
