Players want to double up in Sun City - Your Valley

Sun City pickleball and tennis players want to get back on the courts in teams.

But that is not possible under the Recreation Centers of Sun City reopening guidelines. All pickleball and tennis facilities are limited to singles play as long as the corporation remains in phase 1 of its reopening plan. The reason for the restriction is to promote social distancing, according to Dan Schreoder, RCSC board president.

“We are following the Centers for Disease Control guidelines,” he said.

However, pickleball and tennis players claim they can maintain a six-foot distance between players even when playing doubles.

“We do social distance,” said Frank Speena.

He added they also take other precautions, such as some players wear gloves and the balls are periodically sprayed with disinfectant. Mr. Speena also believes the social distancing rules should be consistent.

“Lawn bowling, which I also participate in, is not practicing social distancing all the time,” he said. “I have some pictures of that on my phone.”

Jan Ek, RCSC general manager, said management staff can observe both sports to make sure they rules are being followed. She also said the social distancing cannot be altered because the phase one rules in the federal “Opening Up America” document are very strict.

Resident Karen McAdam believes there is room to be flexible because other communities in the Northwest Valley, including Surprise and Sun City Grand, do allow doubles play.

“I just came back from playing in Surprise and there were about a dozen Sun City residents there,” she said. “You have to ask yourself, is what you are doing serving the community?”

Ms. McAdam said Surprise officials originally closed off eight of the 16 pickleball courts to increase distance between players. But when they discovered the risk of COVID-19 infection between adjoining courts was unlikely, they reopening the remaining eight.

“My wife is going all over the place to play doubles,” Rich Peterson said.

He added the pickleball club would most likely be willing to buy gloves for all players to decrease the infection risk from multiple players handling the ball during play.

Laurie Ellingson added her voice to the call to allow doubles play. She said playing singles is more exhausting and could open players to a higher risk of heat stroke.

“I have had bilateral knee replacements and my doctor says I cannot play singles,” she explained.

Sun City has 27 lighted pickleball courts in two locations — Marinette Recreation Center, 9860 W. Union Hills Drive, and Mountain View Recreation Center, 9749 N. 107th Ave. All seven courts at Mountain View are outdoors while 12 are outdoors at Marinette. The remaining eight courts at Marinette are under a roof with shades screens in a facility constructed when the center was remodeled several years ago.

Outdoor tennis courts are located at Mountain View; Lakeview, 10626 W. Thunderbird Blvd.; and Bell, 16820 N. 99th Ave., recreation centers. The Bell courts were renovated several years ago.
