Self-help gurus around the globe have talked about what a professional should and shouldn't do to have a productive day. Their advice covers a wide range of elements, from what forms a productive routine to what things can distract from your productivity.

While many of these bits of information can be useful, asking professionals for their advice on the subject tends to generate more actionable insights. This is why we consulted 12 members of Forbes Coaches Council about what things a professional ought to avoid if they want to have a productive and positive day. Here is what they told us.

1. Ruminating On Yesterday's Issues

If you want to start your day off right, don't carry yesterday's issues into your new day. If you had challenging meetings or conversations the day before and woke up ruminating on your horrible experiences, leave that negativity at the door. Especially if the issues were resolved. 2. Deprioritizing Your Self-Care

Work, family obligations and overall responsibilities provide a fantastic excuse to let your self-care practices go by the wayside. Success-minded people understand how critical self-care is to their professional success. Spend time doing things that bring you joy and support your mental and physical health. 3. Overscheduling And Overcommitting

With so much to do, people tend to underestimate how long things take. Don't overschedule and forget to take breaks. Don't forget to allow free time for the unexpected. Don't overcommit to others so you don't let people down. Don't overestimate what you can get done so you don't always feel like a failure. Rather, be realistic about what you do and do it. 4. Worshipping The Snooze Button

No great leader ever wastes time sleeping in when they could be up developing their skills, advancing initiatives or brainstorming new ideas. Studies show that early risers are more proactive, more productive and better at anticipating problems, so get used to rising early. 5. Staying In Your Pajamas

Don't roll out of bed and shuffle to your computer to start your day. Why? Waking up and entering the day is a new chapter and you need your "game face" to be successful. Get up, work out/stretch, clean up and get dressed to face the next phase of the day. It's your "productivity" chapter, however you define it. 6. Starting Your Day With Junk

We are what we feed our minds and body. To set up the most successful day, avoid consuming junk food and mindless television and doing other unproductive activities. 7. Checking Your Phone First Thing

A great way to stimulate stress hormones is to check your phone when you wake up in the morning. Your body and mind need a wake-up period that is free from the stimulation of news, email and social media. Give yourself an opportunity to breathe, anticipate the wonder of the day and be grateful for what you have. 8. Letting Others Program Your Thinking

Do not let others program your thinking. What we hear, see and say has a direct influence on how we think. Starting your day with the latest newscast or snarky comments on social media does not serve you well. 9. Getting Caught Up In The Overview

How many times have you woken up and before you can stretch and smile, you groan about all the have-tos for today and the incomplete musts from yesterday? It can ruin a great day. Be aware and realize these are just thoughts. You can choose to recalibrate by thinking about all you have to be grateful for and looking for the bright points in your day. Research shows that we normally experience more positive events in a day than negative, yet our minds often focus on the negative due to a subconscious bias called the negativity bias. 11. Leaving Your Day To Randomness

Don't let things happen; make them happen. Lack of structure leads to ineffectiveness as it leaves room for distractions. Have a clear to-do list as it serves as a framework and creates boundaries of what you need to focus on. 12. Waiting For The Best Life Hack

The worst daily habit is waiting for things to happen and for an opportunity to knock at your door. When you do so, you become a passive observer, not a proactive player in your own life.
