TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Despite COVID-19 claiming nearly 60,000 lives, the state never mandated a vaccine, although state law allows it. Now, some lawmakers want to take away the right completely.
Governor Ron DeSantis argued the rule was not consistent with the constitution and is not legally authorized. He said there is no police power the federal government can unilaterally impose medical policy under the guise of workplace regulation.
Local taxpayers are also divided on the subject.
“It’s basically saying this is a huge dilemma and needs to be dealt with immediately so getting vaccinated to help minimize the spread would help a lot,” said Baha Chappell.
State law currently said the state health officer can use any means necessary to vaccinate or treat someone who poses a danger to public health.
Nurse Practitioner Sue Hook who operates a clinic in Cape Coral isn’t convinced a mandate works in theory.
“The more we talk about mandates the angrier people become,” said Hook.
There are two bills to get rid of the state’s right to mandate vaccines in an emergency. They would have to pass both houses and be signed by the governor to become law.
