In response to Pamela Noel’s recent article on the waste stream, I am prompted to voice my concern about all forms of trash that we all generate every day which has no where to go but the ocean or a landfill. For instance, when I go to the market, which is Holiday for me, but it could be any grocery store, there are only rare instances when I can use a recyclable or otherwise safe disposable wrapping for my cheese, meat, etc. instead of a styrofoam or plastic container! Think about it, every day we all eat something that comes in a plastic container which has no where to go but in a dump. We are running out of dump space. And no, recycling is not the answer because all recyclables are not used a second time, and most recyclable items are NOT recycled at all.
I would like to be part of the solution, but it is hard to know where to start. I look for my food in wrapping that looks somewhat more recyclable than the hard plastic trays or styrofoam, but that does not leave me much choice. And yes, I recycle as much as I can, BUT there is no guarantee that it ACTUALLY does get recycled. There is an online article “Plastic and Health – The Hidden Costs of a Plastic Planet.” But of course, if this is a subject that you would rather sweep under the table then you can choose to disbelieve that we have a major problem on our hands.
I know, I know, there are so many other real problems on our planet — hunger, disease, murder, war — why choose this one topic? It is seemingly impossible to solve all of these major problems. So some days I just try to accept that we are all “going down the drain,” as so many animals are already doing.
