TRAVERSE CITY — A basic emergency medical technician course will be offered beginning Oct. 18 and running through April 9, 2022, at the Foster Family Community Health Center in Traverse City.
Basic EMT training provides an introduction to emergency medical services. This course lays the firm foundation for a career in emergency medical services and is a required prerequisite for further training as an Advanced EMT and Paramedic.
The course is approved by the Michigan Department of Community Health and includes pre-hospital care, including oxygen, bleeding control and C-spine immobilization.
A minimum of 48 hours of clinical observation time is required in addition to the 260 hours of scheduled class time.
Prior to the course, participants must:
• Obtain CPR certification in either American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer. For those with current certification, it must not expire before the end of the EMT course.
• Show proof of hepatitis B vaccination (or in the process of receiving the vaccination) or a signed declination form.
• Show proof of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) immunization and current flu vaccination.
• Show proof of professional liability insurance obtained from their agency sponsor or a commercial insurance company.
• Show proof of high school diploma or GED.
• Complete the Health Occupations Basic entrance Test to be arranged at the Munson Regional EMS Education office prior to the course beginning. This is not required if participants can show proof of one semester of college English and math.
Classes will be held 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, as well as some Saturdays. To register, go to munsonhealthcare.org/clinical-education/ems-education/emtb-emt-training.
Maximum enrollment is 24 students. Munson reserves the right to cancel the class if there are less than 10 students. Payment is due no later than the first night of class unless prior arrangements are made. Full scholarships are available.
