Only 30 percent of Republicans want former president Donald Trump to run unopposed in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, according to a new poll. That's assuming he does run, which he's strongly hinted at numerous times in recent months.

According to the Echelon Insights poll, 39 percent Republicans prefer that Trump competes with other candidates in the primary, while 22 percent said they'd rather the former president not run again at all.

The results are based on a survey question in which Republican-leaning respondents were asked, "Which of the following would you prefer to see in the 2024 Republican presidential primary?"

Republican-identifying respondents were also asked in the survey: "If the 2024 Republican presidential primaries were being held today and you had to make a choice, for whom would you vote?"

Only 40 percent said they will "definitely" vote for Trump in a Republican primary, while 19 percent said they will "probably" vote for him. Meanwhile, 16 percent said that they will "definitely" vote for another Republican candidate.

In another survey question, respondents were asked: "If Donald Trump does NOT seek the Republican nomination for President in 2024 and the presidential primaries were being held today, for whom would you vote?"

Twenty-two percent of Republican respondents said they would potentially vote for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, while 15 percent said they would opt for former Vice President Mike Pence. Nine percent said they would vote for Donald Trump Jr., and another 9 percent said they would choose Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.

Another poll, released Monday by Harvard CAPS-Harris, indicated that over half of Republican voters would choose Trump for 2024.

"While defeated candidates rarely come back, Trump has a strong lead in the Republican primary especially among the most dedicated Republicans," said Mark Penn, co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey.

The poll also suggested that Trump is favored over other GOP candidates for the presidential nomination, with Pence being second choice for Republicans as he earned support from 13 percent of voters.

The Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey also showed that DeSantis was the third choice as he received only 9 percent, despite his popularity among the GOP due in part to his fight against COVID mask and vaccine mandates.
