The world’s largest triceratops skeleton is going up for auction. And if you happen to have a few million dollars lying around, it could be yours.
“Big John,” as it is commonly known, is going up for auction Oct. 21 at the Drouot auction house in Paris, according to a story on CNN, where it is expected to fetch anywhere between $1.4 to $1.7 million (or 1.2 to 1.5 million Euros since it’s in Paris).
More than 66 million years old, John’s skull, CNN reports, is 8 feet, 7 inches long and 6 feet, 7 inches wide. Its two largest horns are 3 feet, 7 inches long and more than 11.8 inches wide at their base. The skeleton is 60% complete and includes a near-complete skull. (He does, however, have a laceration in his collar, possibly from a fight with another triceratops.)
The dinosaur lived in the area that’s currently South Dakota, specifically the Hell Creek formation. It was discovered by geologist Walter W. Stein Bill in 2014, excavated a year later and eventually restored in Italy.
This is not the first time dinosaur bones have been auctioned off to the highest bidder, a T-Rex skeleton sold for 31.8 million last year, setting a world record.
But paleontologists have raised concerns about such auctions, saying that these specimens need to be available to the scientific community and not sold to a private party.
