'U mad, bro?': Steelers fans want more faith; Pitt fans want more coverage; Pirates fans want more wins - TribLIVE

sambitasa.blogspot.com

The Steelers season is just starting. The Pirates season is finally ending. Pitt’s fan base is starting to wake up. And the emotions from all sides are equally raw.

That’s abundantly clear in this week’s “U mad, bro?”.

After their win Sunday over the Buffalo Bills, this Twitter follower remained dubious of the Steelers.

C’mon. If the Steelers upset the Bills in Buffalo, they should be able to at least beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Pittsburgh.

We’ll find out in Week 3. And, God willing, renowned Steelers killer and future Hall of Famer Ryan Finley won’t come back to play quarterback for Cincy.

Then … then I’d be scared.

I’m always up for a good NFL anti-Steelers conspiracy theory. Let’s see what “WBrown” has to offer.

I know the NFL is looking for either a Buffalo, KC, Baltimore or Cleveland AFC winner against Tampa Bay. I know that’s what they’re looking for, so that Brady can further cement his royalty for the NFL hierarchy. But fate just might have other plans.

When I saw that the NFL is a partner with DraftKings, I’m not going to say nothing more, but to say just watch. I repeat, just watch!

Hmm. So what are we getting at here exactly, W.B.? Let me see if I can walk myself through this.

A. DraftKings controls the NFL.

B. DraftKings and the NFL want Tom Brady to win another Super Bowl to “further cement his royalty.”

C. So they think the best way to do that is to make sure one of the four semifinalists from the AFC playoff bracket last year faces him … instead of the mighty Steelers, I suppose?

I’m confused.

If Brady really needs an eighth title to “cement his royalty,” why would the illuminati at DraftKings rig the league so that one of the top-four betting favorites advances to the Super Bowl instead of a team such as the Steelers that DraftKings had as an 8.5 over-under win total club?

A team that Brady owns in the playoffs, by the way.

Hey, no one does preemptive excuse-making for failure based on a “the league is working against us” premise better than Pittsburghers. But I’m sure you could come up with something better than this, W.B.

The “A Beautiful Mind” thread all over the corkboard is a little frayed on this one.

Ron emailed me on Monday. As in, the Monday after the Steelers’ season-opening win.

And Ron is unhappy with our news judgment.

Did you or anyone else at the Trib know that Pitt played Tennessee on Saturday and WON??!! There is more to life than the Steelers !

First of all, I think we all know there is nothing more to life than the Steelers.

Secondly, we did notice. That’s why our Jerry DiPaola wrote about Pitt’s win that day and every day since.

Lastly, with all due respect to the Panthers’ victory over a team that went 3-7 last season, the Steelers on Sunday just upset one of the AFC’s favorites on the road in their first game of the year.

On the following Monday morning, I’m going to publish something about the Steelers. That’s generally how things work.

You’ll need to pick a perpetual Panther-inferiority-complex battle more carefully next time, Ron.

Mark has a solution for the Pirates’ woes. He thinks soccer-style relegation is the answer

“New rule: You want to field a AAA team? You are demoted to the AAA and play equal caliber teams.

The champs of AAA take the spot of any team that finishes below (a winning percentage of) .333.

That will incentivize teams to invest in their team. These franchises are worth BILLIONS. Playing in AAA hits the owners where it hurts.

$.”

Mark, fair enough. Unfortunately — as bad as they are — that wouldn’t do anything to rectify the Pirates for 2021. If the season ended today, their win percentage would be .372.

Hence, they’d avoid relegation and set themselves up for another free ride through MLB’s standings vacuum next year.

But, hey, at least we’d get rid of the Diamondbacks and Orioles under your rules. I consider that a plus.

Tom has a complaint about Pirates broadcasts and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.

I love Greg Brown. His enthusiasm, passion and competence is admirable. But, he and his various broadcast partners effusive praise for any little thing Ke’Bryan Hayes accomplishes is nauseating.

The scouting reports are correct. He’s a .250 major league hitter, with little power and is an above average fielder. The Pirates don’t need a goodwill ambassador at 3rd base, they need a .285 hitter who can hit 25 home runs. I would trade him in a minute. Bryan Reynolds is the only major league player who should be retained going forward.

I think that’s a great idea. Put Bryan Reynolds out there against major league teams and have him play every position, at the same time, by himself like Bugs Bunny against the Gas House Gorillas.

That, I’d like to watch. Maybe one of the pierogies can help him out and catch.

Seriously, though, about Hayes. His defense is better than above average. I think it’s great. And I can’t blame Brown or the broadcast crew for getting extra excited when he turns in a sparkler.

I mean, c’mon. You’ve seen this team. What else do they have to get excited about?

Let’s end with one more about the Steelers from “Marauder2372.” He took umbrage with me talking about how the Steelers pulled off their 30-minute “trick” from 2020 of being bad in one half and winning anyway because they were great in the other half.

No more “he’ll bent” than you are to create a way to be offended over an article that was largely positive about the team.

By the way, you know the Steelers got shutout in the first 30 minutes, right? It’s hard to consider that winning football when they don’t score.

But there I go again. Just “he’ll bent” on being critical.
