NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- Delayed due to the pandemic, North Olmsted High School’s charity effort Eagles Nest has finally gotten off the ground this school year helping students in need.

“Our poverty levels are a little too high in North Olmsted, unfortunately,” said North Olmsted High School Counselor Tricia Calloway, who after learning of the concept from a teacher friend created the Eagles Closet. “What I understand from our administration, we have about 40 percent poverty rate in our district so right there says why there is a need.

“There are students who don’t have what they need for school on a daily basis, and I feel like people want to help each other. The response from the community has been amazing. Everybody is trying to help everybody. North Olmsted is an awesome community and very supportive.”

The Eagles Closet helps support students by providing food and personal care items. The room is housed at the high school and supplies are distributed to students through school counselors based on need.

Current Eagles Closet donations of need include mac & cheese, pasta, ramen noodles, peanut butter & jelly, canned soup, body wash, deodorant, shampoo and feminine products. Clothing donations at this time are not being accepted.

“We saw kids who need hygiene projects and sometimes food,” Calloway said. “Maybe they run out of food before the end of the month. Also, school supplies can be expensive, so we stock those as well to help the kids.”

The Eagles Closet effort involves teachers promoting the initiative in classrooms, as well as identifying potential students in need. Also, Calloway, who noted the program involves many people, puts out a needs survey for kids to understand what’s available.

At that point, the counselors meet with the students while keeping participation the Eagles Closet anonymous.

“We meet with that student to find out how serious the needs are at home,” Calloway said. “We then put things together to send home with them. If it needs to be a one-time thing or a weekly thing, we’ll do whatever we need to do. If there are more serious things going on, we have two excellent district social workers.”

While the Eagles Closet is currently focused on high school students, Calloway envisions in the future including middle school counselors who can help out their students.

“The Eagles Closet has been a tremendous resource to our students that find themselves in need,” North Olmsted High School Principal Zach Weagley said. “The counseling team at the high school has done a great job utilizing this resource to support students through challenging times.

“Being able to connect our students to resources on site has been especially beneficial during the difficult times we are all facing.”

Community members interested in donating to the Eagles Closest are encouraged to email Calloway.
