I Want What They Have: Tabitha and Chance Brown - Vogue

Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this new column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples who give us hope for our own romantic futures as we try to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.

There aren’t many married couples I’m genuinely jealous of. No offense to my married friends and loved ones, and yes, I am spectacularly single and alone, but...when you consider the fact that I get to come home, throw my purse wherever it lands, cook or order whatever I want for dinner, and watch exactly what I want on TV every night, a marriage would have to be pretty great to compare. That said, the bond between actress and food influencer Tabitha Brown and her husband, Chance Brown, is one that’s got me testing my dedication to solo-dom.

Tabitha and Chance Brown made the news lately after Tabitha released an emotional YouTube video telling the story of their love; after 15 years of hard work, she was finally able to help her husband retire from his longtime role as an LAPD officer. “It’s a bittersweet moment because it has been an emotional roller coaster of him being a police officer,” Brown said. “As we know, it’s been tough as a Black man, and then also being an officer has been very tough. When my husband went on this journey, he really felt like he could make a difference, and I know that he has in his community. He has done his part. But I also know it’s time for him to dream again.”

Unfortunately, not everyone was a fan of Tabitha helping her husband quit his job and refocus on what he wants. On a recent episode of The Wendy Williams Show, Williams criticized the Browns for their decision, saying, “I predict that this marriage is going to be on real rocky ground in a moment.” Tabitha, though, responded with grace in a second Instagram video. “I did every year with him in the LAPD, and he did every year with me with rejection and nos in this entertainment industry,” she said. “However, God has blessed me.… I’ve been praying on this for a very long time and it has now come to pass.”

Whether or not Wendy Williams agrees, I’m a huge fan of any couple who works together to help one another realize their dreams (and if said dreams happen to coincide with no longer being a cop, well...I’m not mad about it). Tabitha frequently uses the hashtag #tabandchance when she Instagrams pictures of herself and her husband, and while I’m normally diametrically opposed to relationship hashtags, there’s something about these two that makes me forgive it. The couple has two children together, as well as a stepdaughter from Chance’s previous marriage, and it’s incredibly easy to imagine them making their kids roll their eyes while they do bits over breakfast.
