The Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureaux Foundation has donated $4,000 to a fund to help students in need have access to the internet while remote learning. The fund is managed by the Grand Forks Education Foundation.

The gift will support many families in the school district who have limited income, including even more affected by business changes and closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a Grand Forks Public Schools official. The school system looked for ways to provide stable internet connectivity not only for students but for their entire household without causing them a financial burden, said Tracy Jentz, community engagement and communication director.

“It has become critically important for all students to have consistent and reliable internet connectivity,” said Eric Ripley, director of career and technical education and technology for GFPS. “Through this generous donation, families in need are able to achieve this.”

“Now, more than ever, access to the internet is a necessity for kids to be successful in school,” said Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureaux in a news release. “Limited access should not be a barrier to reaching one’s full potential. We are happy to continue our work with the Grand Forks Foundation for Education in our efforts to make a difference in the Grand Forks community.”

This program still needs additional support, said Emilia Hodgson, executive director of the foundation. Donations can be made online at donate.gffoundation.org/giving and select “Internet Assistance Fund” in the drop-down menu. Or, donors may mail gifts to: Grand Forks Foundation for Education, 2400 47th Ave. S., P.O. Box 5475, Grand Forks, N.D. 58206-5475.

Among many other achievements in hockey competition, the Lamoureaux twins, who grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from UND, were instrumental in helping Team USA defeat Canada for the gold medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea -- the United States’ first gold in ice hockey in 20 years.
