Governor loosens the rules for visiting nursing homes | Oct. 23
Keep your promises
One week ago, I received a call from my daughter telling me the governor had been on the news talking about visits for extended care facilities. She was so excited that maybe finally we could visit my husband, her father, who is in a memory care facility. We have only been able to see him through a window since March.
I anxiously scanned the paper online the next day and found the article. I read that the governor said that visitors will be allowed to meet with residents outdoors, even if a COVID-19 case has been recently reported in the facility. He went on to say that family members will be allowed to hug loved ones and children can visit the facilities. My 5-year-old grandson has longed to visit his “Popi." I called the facility on Friday and was told they were checking with their corporate office and would know something the next week.
This week, I called again and they were still waiting to hear from corporate. Today, I spoke with the social worker and was told that they cannot allow visits until they go 14 days without a positive test. They said these are the guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and corporate says they need to follow these guidelines.
I think the isolation and lack of family visits is worse for the residents than the risk of being infected. My husband appears to be fading away. His type of dementia has resulted in him eating only pureed foods, and he has to be fed. He will lose his ability to talk also. I just want to hear him and see him face to face before it is too late.

Where’s your empathy gene?
Leonard Pitts perfectly summed up Jared Kushner’s comment about Black people need to “want to be successful” with “Dude, you were born standing on third. We were born at home plate, down in the count.”
Kushner should acquaint himself with the book “Black Like Me” by John Howard Griffin, who expertly disguised himself as a Black man in the rural South for six weeks in the early 1960s. Even the Black man who shined his shoes didn’t recognize him. As expected, Griffin suffered the indignities that Black men went through during that time. And a few years later, after the book was published, Griffin was brutally beaten while in Mississippi by white men. Like his father-in-law, Kushner is clearly missing the empathy gene.

Mandatory mask order enforcement
I want to be safe first
I would prefer to do all my shopping with local brick-and-mortar stores to support local employment and our local economy rather than order needed items online from out of state companies. But my experience is that some of the stores in Hillsborough and Pasco counties don’t care enough about their customers' and employees' health and safety during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Today, at one large store, there were unmasked customers as well as vendors stocking shelves. At another store, the same thing was happening.
The local merchants are obviously unwilling to confront people who are ignoring the county mask mandates in indoor public spaces. But if I started shoplifting or came into the store naked, I am sure the same store managers who don’t enforce masking would enforce the laws against theft and public nudity. From now on, I am not patronizing these particular local stores and taking my purchasing power elsewhere.

Joe Biden and Hunter Biden
What am I missing?
I can’t find your story on Tony Bobulinski alleging that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s was involved with the China deals. Did I miss it, or is the Tampa Bay Times not reporting on this huge issue?
