CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When the world went sideways, I painted my porch. Ripped out my bedroom carpet. And last week, wallpapered an armoire.
I wanted to feel productive, like I was accomplishing something while we were stuck at home, rather than waiting for the pandemic to end.
In June, Dan Root of Richmond Heights wrote to us: “The house is looking good, but the longer I’m here full time, the more I’ll see and start fixing. We need a speedy remedy to COVID-19, or I may just have to rebuild my house from the footers to the tip of the chimney.”
Four months later, coronavirus cases are surging, and we’re looking at a long winter ahead. So another round of home improvement projects might be required.
How have you improved your home during the pandemic? What do you have planned?
Maybe you had time to build the patio you always dreamed of. Or maybe you finally fixed the squeaking door that drove you nuts. Or maybe you watched all of The Home Edit on Netflix and finally cleaned out (and color-ordered) your closet.
Whatever way, Americans have doubled down on DIY.
In August, Lowe’s reported that comparable store sales in the U.S. spiked 35.1%, and online orders more than doubled, according to the Associated Press. At Home Depot stores open at least a year, sales surged 25% in the U.S. during the second quarter.
We want to see photos of what you’ve accomplished. So show off your hard work. Or tell us what you’re planning to work on.
Send an email to Laura Johnston at ljohnston@cleveland.com. Good luck!
