DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) - Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds would not say if she would sign legislation, which would allow people in the state to buy and carry handguns without a permit.
The legislation passed the Iowa House and Senate and awaits her signature or veto. She said her office hasn't received it yet, but they will do a thorough evaluation once they get it.
Under the bill, a person buying a gun from a federally-licensed dealer would still need to pass a federal background check or present a permit to carry. But a resident would no longer need a permit before purchasing guns between private citizens.
"I've been pretty clear when we are talking about gun violence, we need to take a holistic approach. There isn't a single answer. We need to be following the laws that are in the books. We need to make sure that coordination is in place between the agencies. We need to do everything we can to be proactive in everything and just addressing mental health and behavioral health issues," said Reynolds.
The governor said she is proud of the efforts they have made in addressing mental health in the state. But she acknowledged there is still a lot of work to do.
She was asked how she feels about the state's current gun policies.
"Well I think, and as I have said too in most of the comments, and I went back to verify this, I said I thought that the policies were good that were in place, but I will continue to take a look at new legislation that is presented and I think that is the appropriate approach," said Reynolds.
In 2010, Reynolds - then a state senator - voted for the current permit system.
