GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Starr and Stolley Elementary Schools are collecting donations to help students and their families in need. The schools are looking for winter coats, shoes, pants or any other new or gently used item that can help.
“We have a variety of students in our school, low income and higher income,” GIPS Social Worker Nicki Nesvara said. “Everybody has needs whatever we can to help provide, that’s why we have social workers at grand island public schools.”
Nesvara said this is an opportunity to not only help the students while they’re in class, but also to support the family at home as well. They’re seeing more of a need this year due to the pandemic.
“This last year with COVID has been really difficult for a lot of families,” she said. “If we can alleviate some of that financial stress for them so they can pay another bill, we are happy to do that.”
Social workers encourage anyone who needs help to reach out to them, so they can assist in any way they can.
“There is a social worker at every school so if they need food or clothes or any other kind of community resource, they can reach out to their school social worker and get some help,” GIPS Intern Social Worker Valerie Roth said.
Donations can be dropped at either school.
