Topline
Jeff Bezos will be stepping down as Amazon’s CEO, a shocking change in its own right, but the move has also put the spotlight on his successor, a little-known but powerful executive named Andy Jassy who runs the company’s cloud computing unit.
Key Facts
Jassy is currently CEO of Amazon Web Services, the e-commerce giant’s lucrative cloud storage arm, which accounted for 67% of the entire company’s operating profit last quarter, aided by skyrocketing demand during the pandemic.
Under Jassy’s guidance, AWS has emerged as a near-unstoppable force in the $100 billion cloud computing industry, beating out Google and Microsoft and landing big customers like Zoom.
Jassy joined Amazon in 1997, and worked as Bezos’ technical assistant before eventually helping to launch AWS in 2006.
Jassy is a close confidant of Bezos, Insider reported, and was involved in the controversial decision to boot Parler off AWS following the Capitol riot, a move which has drawn both praise and a lawsuit from the right-wing social media network.
Jassy hasn’t escaped controversy: He defended AWS’s facial recognition software as critics pressured the company to halt sales to law enforcement, and stated publicly that the Trump administration’s “disdain” for Amazon contributed to it losing out on the lucrative JEDI military cloud contract last year.
Crucial Quote
"AWS and Jassy—they're the gatekeepers," Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, told Insider. "Jassy's one of the most powerful leaders not just within the cloud and the tech sector but in the world of business.”
Key Background
Bezos said he was stepping down Wednesday to focus on his other interests. These include the Day 1 Fund, which doles out millions to organizations combating homelessness and funds the building of preschools for low-income families, as well as the Bezos Earth Fund, which funds climate change initiatives. Bezos, who is the richest person in the world, also said he wants to spend time on his commercial space company Blue Origin and The Washington Post, which he has owned since 2013.
Surprising Fact
In September, the Washington Post declared Jassy the “heir apparent” after another Bezos deputy, Jeff Wilke, retired in August. Wilke ran Amazon’s worldwide consumer business, and was considered a top choice to replace Bezos.
