PEORIA (WEEK) - Tax season is here and a local volunteer tax assistance site is providing free help to those in need.

To qualify for the free assistance you must have an annual income of $57,000 or less.

METEC has provided the service for around nine years and the past two years they have partnered up with Bradley University's students.

With the pandemic, the center has had to adapt their system turning it into a two step appointment only process. This allows Bradley University's accounting students to assist with taxes virtually.

“It allows us as an agency to be able to serve more clients and actually meet the need," said METEC Executive Director, Julie Hudelson Schmidgall. "Usually we are able to serve about 800 to 1,000 families every tax year and we're hoping to grow that. With Bradley’s capacity we are able to grow that number.”

The center offers its assistance every Saturday and Monday now through the first week of April.

Their services are available to most residents in Central Illinois who qualify.
