QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -- Horizons soup kitchen and food pantry in Quincy handed out ready to eat meals, also known as MRE's, to those in need Monday.
The pantry is normally open from 9AM to 3PM Monday through Friday. However, due to the wintry weather across the Tri-State and the slick roads, much of the staff and volunteers could not make it in today.
Undeterred by the lack of staff, Director of Operations Jennafer White said they decided for the first time to hand out MRE meals to those in need of a warm meal. The meals were donated to Horizon's and by noon over a dozen had been handed out.
Jennafer White said, "Even though our volunteers and some of our staff weren't able to to be at the building, we're still getting hot meals into the hands of those who need them."
White hopes to continue handing out MRE's in the future whenever the weather forces the facility to close down.
She said she never wants there to be a day when the facility is completely closed and those who need food do not have the chance to get some.
White went on to say that Horizon's is thankful for the community support, and is continuing to accept donations, weather permitting, through the week.
The items in the highest demand at the moment are hygiene products and canned protein items.
