DULUTH, MN-- Individuals and families who experience homelessness in St. Louis County has jumped by 18% percent since 2019.
More people are turning to local resources more than ever before.
Five years ago, The Duluth Harbor Mission started its journey of helping those on the West end of Duluth.
What started as hot meals in red wagons now sits on West 3rd Street.
Duluth Harbor Mission Executive Director, Veronica Ciurleo, says they offer hundreds a place to turn.
"People in need and desperate situations can come to Duluth Harbor Mission, and we can help them with immediate basic needs," said Ciurleo.
With the cold setting in, the effects of the pandemic are starting to hinder their work.
Going from a lobby full of conversations to service out of a door, something Ciurleo says has been a challenge.
"The homeless population is not able to even go into buildings at this time to warm up or to rest, said Ciurleo. "It's breaking our hearts because we are used to having folks coming in and talking with them and seeing what other needs they have."
Community needs that still need to be met, but now with added financial support.
AT&T has donated $10,000 to Duluth Harbor House Mission for various costs to help care for those in need.
"It was pretty neat! They contacted us and basically said we would like to do this. We would like to extend a hand, a helping hand, up into the Duluth area," said Ciurleo.
Grants like these are something that mission volunteers like John Schulte say make a big impact.
"A lot of these people are living on the streets. They don't have a warm place to stay. They are in a tent," said Schulte.
Continuing to make a difference to help those who need it the most.
"They feel better after leaving here, they really do," said Schulte.
Despite this grant, Duluth Harbor Mission is still in need of community support.
They are in need of gloves and hats, if you would like to donate, you can stop by Monday through Saturday.
