VESTAL (WBNG) -- While the annual Shelter Slam concert may have been cancelled due to the coronavirus, that didn't stop organizers from coming together to help local animals in need.

The event is typically a day long concert organized by John Delola and sponsored by Olums. Organizers say while they knew that wasn't going to work this year, they wanted to keep the event alive in some form.

That's why they decided to hold a drive through pet supply drop off in the Olum's parking lot. The event benefited Every Dog's Dream Rescue, Willow's Wings Animal Sanctuary, Pibbles and More Animal Rescue, Broome County Humane Society, and Jimmy J's Avian Rescue.

Coordinator Lisa Cruz says she was inspired to coordinate the event after recently adopting a pet.

"I saw a lot of the work that goes into having a shelter. All of the volunteers and just the problem in this community of homeless animals, and all of the work that goes into solving the problem. It just seems like it's endless," Cruz said.

Organizers encourage anyone who wasn't able to make it to consider making a donation to a local shelter on your own.
