Bill Belichick really wants to get back on the practice field.
The Patriots coach made that perfectly clear after the team’s 18-12 loss to the Broncos on Sunday, and has continued to reiterate it this week as they get ready to face the 49ers this Sunday. The Pats have practiced just twice — with one being a walkthrough — over the last two weeks due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests, and the lack of time together showed up in an ugly loss on Sunday.
Belichick was sure to emphasize his team’s need for practice in his press conference on Wednesday morning. When asked how N’Keal Harry has taken advantage of his expanded role this season — the wide receiver has already seen 266 snaps, more than he did all of last season (220) — the coach quickly turned his attention to practice.
“As a team, we need more time on the practice field than we’ve had recently, so hopefully we’ll get that this week and that’ll be good for all of us,” Belichick said. “I think we all need to work on fundamentals and awareness and anticipation and things like that. It’s true of every position. Obviously the passing game, quarterbacks, receivers, backs, tight ends, there’s a lot of that, and we need it on defense as well with defensive recognition. That’s something, I wouldn’t say starting all over, but we need a lot of work on that. I think we’ve made some games but we need to do more on the field and hopefully we’ll be able to do that this week.
“That’s N’Keal, that’s everybody. He’s way ahead of where he was last year because he’s been on the field and he’s been practicing. There was a point in time where we strung together a lot of quality reps and we need to do that again.”
The Patriots are expected to practice this afternoon — their first Wednesday practice in three weeks — and will practice again Thursday and Friday ahead of Sunday’s game.
