Hong Sang Soo snagged the Silver Bear for Best Director at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale)!
On February 29 local time, the director attended the prestigious award ceremony together with actresses Kim Min Hee and Seo Young Hwa, the stars of his new film “The Woman Who Ran.”
The movie, which premiered at the festival earlier this week, tells the story of a woman who meets three friends from her past—two of them intentionally, one of them by chance—while her husband is away on a business trip.
“The Woman Who Ran” marks Hong Sang Soo’s fourth film to be screened at the Berlinale, and it won him his very first Silver Bear this year, making him only the second Korean director in Berlinale history to win the award for Best Director (following Kim Ki Duk).
During his acceptance speech, Hong Sang Soo remarked, “I want to thank everyone. Thank you to the people who worked for me, the organizers of the film festival, and the judges.”
He then expressed his gratitude to Kim Min Hee and Seo Young Hwa by asking them to rise, explaining, “I’d like it if the actresses could stand and receive an ovation.”
