I think Melvin Gordon will start at running back for the Broncos and get more carries than rookie Javonte Williams. But it’ll be close, maybe a 60/40 split. Williams is the heir apparent.
Brandon, rock chalk
Kiz: Let’s not mince words. Williams has to win the starting job. He needs to gain 1,000 yards as a rookie. Why? Should the Broncos fail to trade for Aaron Rodgers, there’s no way Denver will be a playoff team, unless Williams is all that and a bag of chips. Drew Lock? Teddy Bridgewater? Neither quarterback is a truly legit starter in the NFL.
I hope Williams is the starting running back because Gordon is a bumbling, fumbling machine.
Kris, forward thinker
Kiz: I’d take Williams rushing for 1,150 yards and Gordon adding 650. Give me that and maybe Lock or Bridgewater could tag along for a 10-victory season.
Coach Jared Bednar was right to call the Avs out after their 3-2 loss Friday night in Vegas. I just wish Bednar had that same passion when defending them, though. He showed zero emotion after the Ryan Reaves garbage hit. He played it down, and has a history of that. Bednar is trending heavily into the territory of Dave Lewis, the former Red Wings coach who couldn’t get the most from a talented team. I hope I’m wrong. But, man, there are a lot of parallels.
Sean, Arvada
Kiz: By questioning the Avalanche’s physical and mental toughness, Bednar pushed all his chips to the middle of the table. This is big boy hockey. There’s no room for hurt feelings.
Are you jealous that Bednar beat you to the trashing punch?
Max, Littleton
Kiz: Elbows and snark were both meant to be sharp. There’s no waiting until next year for this group of Avs. If this team doesn’t win the Cup, this postseason is a failure and Bednar will be on the hot seat.
Show some respect to coach Michael Malone, every man on the roster from Facu Campazzo to Bol Bol, and the entire organization from scouts to top executive Tim Connelly. Victory hath many fathers. Verily, it taketh a Mile High hoops village.
Mike, mayor of Nuggetsville
Kiz: George Karl was a great NBA coach. But if he were still in charge on the Denver bench, I can assure you Karl would’ve played the victim card when Jamal Murray went down with a season-ending injury. Malone doesn’t have time or patience for excuses. From anybody. About anything. That makes him my kind of coach.
And today’s parting shot is a gentle reminder why this knucklehead is genuinely thankful for every reader during the past 30 years that has banged an angry fist on the kitchen table in response to one of my half-baked columns.
I cannot wait until you retire, quit, move on or expire in some manner and we get a competent scribe who at least cares about the teams he writes about and at least understands the sports he writes about. You have not fooled me since you have arrived on the scene! You have never, ever fit with the loyal fan base of the Rocky Mountains.
