WORCESTER, Mass. - "There's too many people out in the streets. I think this is a big change," said South High School sophomore Jonaliz Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said after seeing homeless people living in Worcester, she wanted to help make a change in her community.

"You see people under bridges, they're sleeping on the floor, they might not have food,” said Rodriguez. “There's people maybe when you get off the exits off highways, there's people holding signs in need of food, money.”

A school project is helping her and her classmates take action.

They came up with the 'Community Cupboard.'

The pamphlet lists places across Worcester which provide free food, shelter and resources for people who are in need, like Saint John's Food for the Poor, the Friendly House and the Worcester County Food Bank.

"The project is all about helping the community and the city we live in,” sophomore Maxwell Ngata said. “There are a lot of people struggling in the city."

The project is being piloted by numerous Worcester Public Schools this year.

"It was supposed to be really based on students taking interactive actions to civics, helping other people, helping their community, identifying issues and needs in their community and what they should do with it,” U.S. history teacher Mike Papagni said.

The class has printed hundreds of pamphlets, hoping to bring them to places with a lot of foot traffic like restaurants, bus stations and hospitals.

"As we grow up, we can give back to the community for free,” Rodriguez said.

"You know, it's our city,” Ngata said. “We live here and we love the people."
