BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- While it's only January, the past month has shown Broome County that residents may be in for a tough winter.
In the past three weeks, the Southern Tier has had its fair share of inclement weather -- from 41 inches of snow to flooding.
And with the many winter months ahead, Chenango Supply says to not panic, but to be prepared.
"I, myself, have been in a situation where you don't know until you need it. And then when you need it, you're running around fumbling and then you're in a tough spot," said Mike Palmatier, Sales Manager at Chenango Supply.
Chenango Supply says most people know to be stocked up with the essentials, like rock salt, shovels, brushes and plumbing products, to name a few.
But they say they also recommend another investment -- the snow blower, which they say has spiked a lot of interest from customers lately.
Snow blowers, they say, can last 25-30 years if taken care of properly. The store adds they've seen some snowblowers in their shop that people have had for over 25 years and just need some minor adjustments or maintenance.
"With the amount of snow we just got, I saw people struggling, shoveling and people looked a little upset out there. It is a little bit of an investment, but we do have a small engine shop here," added Palmatier.
The store also suggests to be prepared if more heavy rain is on the horizon -- like getting heavy duty tarps.
Chenango Supply adds that if you're prepared and ready to do work yourself, you won't have to rely on emergency personnel, adding that investing in winter necessities could save you in the long run.
